Side effects and risks of HRT

I definitely want to think about this. I want to be responsible.

I understand the risk now and can balance that against the benefits, to me, of feeling back to normal.

I know that any medication carries risks and side effects, HRT is no different.

Guidance from NICE (National Institute for Health and Care Excellence) says that for women with symptoms, the risks of HRT are small and usually outweighed by the benefits. The full link to the NICE Guidance, which has information for doctors and for women, is available in the Resources chapter. You will be most interested in your own personal risks and that is why you need a full and individual discussion about HRT before starting it. You will want to ask:

What are the known risks of HRT; and

How do these risks apply to me?

Before starting HRT, as well as understanding the known risks with its use, you will want to know about possible side effects that you may experience. As with any medicine, these need to be balanced against the benefits you will get from being on the treatment. For most women, starting HRT around the age of natural menopause or for early menopause, HRT will be low risk, but only you can decide whether any risk, however small, is worth taking in order to treat your symptoms.
